PILL NOT ALL BADRecent research has shown that birth control pills prescribed to premenopausal women have many beneficial effects: a documented 60-80% reduction in ovarian cancer risk with 10 years of BCP use, lessened risk of uterine cancer and os-teoporosis, and reduction in acne and hirsutism. The pill also protects fallopian tube function, conferring lower rates of pelvic inflammatory disease, and ectopic pregnancy. Beneficial effects of the pill upon the breast include, fewer fibroad-enomas and fibrocystic changes, less breast pain, and fewer breast biopsies.Another benefit of being on the pill is menstrual cycle symptom control. Best choices for premenopausal women up to age 52, or even into early menopause would be ALESSE, LOESTRIN 1/20, or more recently, BCP, LEVLITE. Minor side effects include nausea, mood swings, and breast tenderness and disappear within the first three months. The risk of deep venous thrombosis is only 3 cases per 10,000 in non-smoking, predisposed women. --> return to menu / back ... (click) --> return to top of the page (click) |
