FROM OUR READERSWe received a storyfrom Ms. Susan Friedman, Professor Emeritus ofMathematics . Susan has been my patient since September 1978 and this is her contributions to our letter.Small World Department by Susan L. Friedman Our cruise ship stopped at the island of Cyprus. In the city of Limassol, my husband Stanley and I walked the main shopping streets. We really didn't need aything, but after the harrowing experience of the Grand Bazzar in Instanbul, Turkey-4,000 shops under one roof, being hawked at by every storekeeper so that it was impsosible to even look at any merchandise- we were happy to be in a place where one could browse without being accosted. A nice pair of brown shoes caught Stanley's eye-25 Cyprian pounds - about $50. We walked in and were met by a very nice young woman. "What size?" she asked. Nine-and-a-half D made no sense to her. To the rescue came a young man, the store manager. His English was very good and when he was told Stanley's size, he promptly pulld out a size 43 from the shelf. Perfect fit! "How did you know?" we inquired. "I've spent some years in the U.S.," he responded. "I'm a gradaute of Queens College." "That's my alma mater, too," I said.
