RECENT CHILDBIRTH MAY WORSEN BREAST CANCER OUTLOOKWomen diagnosed with breast cancer less than 2 years after their last childbirth are about 1.6 times more likely to die of the disease than women who gave birth more than 5 years before their breast cancer was detected . The difference in risk persisted regardless of age and diagnosis, tumor size and disease stage, researchers reported recently in the British Medical journal, 1997;315:851-855 .Treatment may need to be more aggressive after a pregnancy because very young women are more likely to have given birth recently. It may help explain why these women tend to have a poor prognosis. It also suggests that women who have had breast cancer and are considering becoming pregnant should consider the possibility of relapse, according to Cela Burn, PH.D., an epidemiologist at Bringham and Women's Hospital in Boston. --> return to menu / back ...
