HPV REPORTEDLY CAUSES ANAL AS WELL AS CERVICAL CARCINOMAA study of 1505 Danish and Swedish patients found that 84% of those with anal cancer had tumors that tested positive for high-risk types of human papilloma virus (HPV), notably HPV-16, which is responsible for cervical cancer. By comparison, none of the tumors of control patients with adenocarcinoma of the rectum were HPV positive, according to this study.A control group of 554 people with neither cancer also were included to measure possible risk factors for anal cancer. Those with higher risk for anal cancer had a higher number of sexual partners, first intercourse before age sixteen, a history of anal intercourse or anogenital warts. A new study suggests that preventing HPV infection might prevent anal cancer (Keerti Shah, M.D., Ph.D., of Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health). We have substantial proof that HPV causes cervical cancer, and now it appears the same virus can cause cancer of the anus and vulva.
