HRT BENEFITS LARGER THAN RISKS IN WOMEN WITH FAMILY HISTORY OF BREAST CANCERAccording to a report in the December 1, 1997 Annals of Internal Medicine, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) does not significantly elevate the risk of breast cancer in women with a family history of the disease, but does significantly reduce overall mortality of the group.Dr. Thomas Seller, of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and colleagues there and elsewhere conducted a prospective cohort study in which they examined risk factors for cancer and subsequent diagnosis and mortality in more than 41,800 Iowa women 55-69 years old. A little more than 12% of the women in the co-hort reported a family history of breast cancer. Within this sub-group, those who used HRT for at least 5 years, had an incidence of breast cancer of 61 cases per 10,000 person years. In the same subgroup, those who did not use HRT developed breast cancer at the rate of 46 cases per 100,000 person-years-not a significant difference. On the other hand, the relative risk of overall mortality in women with a family history who used HRT was .067 compared with women in the same group who did not use HRT. After age adjustment, HRT use was associated with 50% lower all cause mortality rate in these women with a family history of breast cancer. The relative risk of cancer-specific mortality in HRT users in this group compared with non-users was 0.75. Women with a family history of the disease who have used HRT seem to have a decreased risk for death. AnnInternMed 1997, 127: 973-980 --> return to menu / back ...
