STOMACH ULCERSMost of the 25 million Americans who have peptic ulcers do not know that most of the cases are caused by abacterial infection and are thus curable with antibiotics . Moreover, another recent survey showed that almost 90% of primary care physicians identified infection with the bacterium Helicobacter Pylori as the principle cause of peptic ulcers . However, about half of them gave ulcer patients antacids and acid blocking medication, without testing the patients for HPylori infection. Most Americans, 60%, still believe ulcers are caused by stress, while just 27% said ulcers are caused by a bacterial infection, according to a survey of 2,512 adults conducted by the Center for Disease Control in Prevention Atlanta. Ulcers can now be cured for good, whereas in the past, when treatment (with antacids and acid blockers) was stopped, the symptoms could come back, said David Swerloff,M.D., a researcher with CDC who helped design a new educational campaign about H Pylori and ulcers.
