DESIGNER CHOLESTEROLA synthetic version of 'good' cholesterol, injected into arteries, cleared them of plaque like 'liquid drano' and reduced artery disease in just six weeks. Researchers gave 36 patients who had heart attacks or severe chest pain five weekly IV doses of a lab-produced form of an especially effective type of HDL the 'good' cholesterol that helps guard against heart disease by ridding the blood stream of plaque. Imaging tests the following week showed that those who got the synthetic protein had a 4% drop in plaque buildup in their coronary arteries. Another 11 people who got placebos had no significant change. 'The concept is sort of liquid Drano for the coronary arteries', said Dr. Steven Nissen, a Cleveland Clinic cardiologist who led the study, the results of which appear in today's Journal of The American Medical Association. The study is a very promising breakthroughbut larger studies will have to be carried out to proof the clinical benefit.Mary Wilson MD --> return to menu / back ...
