HYPERTENSION BREAKTHROUGH

Scientists have identified a gene defect they believe could cause high blood pressure „ a discovery that could lead to new ways of diagnosing or treating the disease.

Researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis studied mice that lacked one or both copies of a gene responsible for producing a protein called RGS2, which regulates blood pressure.

The scientists found that all these mice had very high blood pressure.

Further tests showed it was possible to treat the mice with the defect by giving them substances that block the action of a hormone called angiotensin II, which increases blood pressure.
