WAR AGAINST CANCERThe protein , called cytidine uridine guanosine binding protein-2, or CUGBP2, naturally found in living cells, causes tumors to self-destruct.In tests at the Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis, more than 70% of several types of cancer cells exposed to the chemical were destroyed. The protein interferes with a process that generates new blood vessels and fuels the development of tumors. Even better, it is not toxic to healthy cells and doesn't have to be used in high doses, which might cause side effects. In particular, the protein seems to regulate levels of a protein called cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which has a direct impact on cancer.COX-2 triggers a chain of events that switches on genes involved in poduction of tumor-feeding blood vessels. Without these blood vessels, the tumor is starved of nutrients and dies. CUGBP2 inhibits production of COX-2. (based on the report by Bill Hoffmann) . --> return to menu / back ...
