OVARY-TRANSPLANT PREGNANCY(20th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology: Berlin, Germany; 27-30 June, 2004)25-year-old woman has conceived a baby for the first time after having an ovarian tissue transplant. Doctors from the Universite Catholique de Louvain in Brussels, Belgium, removed and froze ovarian tissue from the unidentified woman before she had chemotherapy treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma. She's now 25 weeks pregnant. The breakthrough gives new hope to other cancer patients whose fertility may be damaged by cancer therapies. The patient underwent cryopreservation of ovarian tissue prior to treatment. The patient was a 32-year-old who had ovarian tissue removed and cryopreserved in 1997, before receiving treatment for advanced Hodgkin's lymphoma. The chemotherapy left her infertile, but killed the tumor, and in April 2003 she was told she was free from cancer. At the time, her frozen ovarian tissue was re-implanted into her body and 4 months later, after 6 years of enforced early menopause; she was menstruating and ovulating normally. In January this year, the woman found that she was pregnant, and is now expecting a baby girl in October. The finding not only provides hope for many cancer patients facing sterilizing treatment but also raises the prospect of women postponing maternity beyond their natural reproductive years to suit their employment and lifestyle plans.
